Default Missions

“In the beginning the church was a fellowship of men and women centering on the living Christ. Then the church moved to Greece, where it became a philosophy. Then it moved to Rome, where it became an institution. Next it moved to Europe where it became a culture, and finally, it moved to America where it became an enterprise.”
(the late Richard Halverson, Chaplain, U.S. Senate)

It’s easy to find ourselves being detoured into all kinds of “default” missions in life.  Followers of Jesus are not exempt from this tendency.  We’re in the homestretch of “The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly” as we’ve been exploring how Christianity spread over the last 2000 years and how in the world the church evolved into so many different denominations. Along the way, we’ve seen there have been times when the church has settled for a “default” mission and drifted off-course. These next two weeks are important for us as a church as we consider what it means to be a fellowship of believers centered on the living Christ.  Don’t miss it and bring someone along with you who’s never been to The Branch before.  If you’ve missed either of the last two messages in this series, you can watch/listen on our website or on iTunes!

Speaking of this coming weekend, we’re going to take a few moments in our services to pray in regard to the coming school year. We have hundreds and hundreds of students among us, not to mention teachers, administrators, coaches, staff, etc. We’ll be praying for the protection of our schools, effectiveness of those serving students, growth of our students, and everyone’s witness for Christ.

In light of this coming weekend and so many going back to school, our entire offering will be dedicated for the sake of educating children in the name of Jesus Christ.  The offering will be going to building schools in Ghana, Kenya, as well as helping low-income families in our surrounding communities prepare for school.  If you missed the 90 second video overview this past weekend, you can watch it here

Last of all, I got a chance to view a sample copy of the daily devotional journey through Mark that I wrote this past summer. Jaron Pitts and the team did a fabulous job on the layout, look, and feel of it.  The books are being printed this week.  They will accompany our series through the gospel of Mark beginning the first weekend of September and will be a way for you to spend daily time in the Word throughout this series.

Here’s how you get the book. Show up at your small group that week, or attend the Small Group Connection on either campus September 7 at 5:00 pm. (Can you tell we’d like for you to be in a small group? :-) We want to do everything we can to help see to it that no one feels alone on this journey of following Jesus.) We’ll also be giving the books to our guests who fill out communication cards during this Fall series.

Grace and Peace,

See You This Weekend!
