Hurricane Harvey and Our Initial Response
There’s little doubt most, if not all, of us know someone or are related to someone in southeast Texas right now. A new national record for rainfall in an area in a span of days has been established. It will have ramifications for many people for years to come.
There will be many viable places to give in the coming days and weeks. Yesterday, The Branch Church sent $50,000 to the Ecclesia Church in Houston, which will be used strictly for relief and recovery purposes. Ecclesia is a solid, Jesus-centered church in the heart of Houston with a track-record of ministering to the poor and to people in dire need. One of their ministers, Sean Palmer, has in fact been with us and preached at The Branch in the past. (You can learn more about Ecclesia as a church and their relief effort in the wake of the hurricane at www.ecclesiahouston.org.)
While $50,000 is but a drop in the bucket for what’s ahead in terms of recovery and relief in the years to come, it’s a significant amount for us. In fact, it’s more than our entire offering last weekend. I wanted you to know, though, what we’ve done initially, while also taking a moment to affirm many of you who’ve been consistent in giving this year.
Because of your prior faithfulness, we were in a position to be spontaneously generous to others in a time of great need. This weekend is “1st and 10” weekend. Let’s continue to “excel in the grace of giving.” (2 Corinthians 8:7)
I love my church! Speaking of that, we’ll continue in our series this weekend with part 3! (If you’re on the road for Labor Day weekend, don’t forget our first service of the weekend on Thursday night, 6:45, at the Vista Ridge Campus.)
See you Thursday or Sunday!
Grace and Peace,
