Nitroglycerin - Blowing Up Bridges Or Healing Hearts

It was Frederick Buechner who observed that sex is like nitroglycerin. It can be used to either blow up bridges or heal hearts. This past weekend in our Anti-Fragile Love series, we talked rather candidly about the place of sexual intimacy in our lives and its relationship to the marriage covenant. Toward the end of my message, I made a passing comment about pornography and its impact on how we process the matter of sex and sexual desires in our culture today. I wasn’t planning on doing an entire message on this originally, but have since sensed the need to do so in this series. There are too many bridges being blown up and hearts that need to be healed.

This coming weekend, I’ll be unpacking this matter of pornography that is so prevalent and accessible in our culture today. One out of every five mobile devices is used to access it regularly; 24 percent of mobile devices have pornographic images saved on them. The U.S. Justice department recently released a statement that said, “Never before in the history of telecommunications media in the United States has so much indecent (and obscene) material been so easily accessible . . . in so many American homes with so few restrictions.”

The reasons so many of us are drawn to it are deeper than we may realize. But what we feed our eyes and ears provides the content our hearts and minds meditate upon. This eventually impacts how we see people, what we think, what we expect, and how we function in relationships.

There is hope, healing, and transformation available, though, as we follow in the footsteps of Jesus. Hearts can be healed and bridges can be rebuilt. Come with an open heart and bring someone with you.

Hope has the last word.

His name is Jesus.

Grace and peace,

See you this weekend!
