Week of 1/8/17 LIFE IN THE SON "Word of the Year"

  1. What are you thankful for this week? What are you celebrating? What has caused stress or anxiety in your world this week?
  2. What did you hear in this week’s sermon that was new or particularly interesting? Did anything stand out to you as puzzling or troubling?
  3. Chris talked about the “word of the year.” Each year, an organization like the American Dialect Society or the Oxford Dictionary will choose a word that became popular or described a major theme in the culture in the previous year. If you had to choose a “word of the year” for last year, what would it be? If you could choose a “word of the year” for your life for 2017, what would it be?
  4. Read John 20:30-31. What is the purpose John gives for writing down the things found in the book of John? What does John say is the result or consequence of believing in Jesus?
  5. Read John 1:1-5 and Genesis 1:1. How does the way John begins the gospel expand your understanding of Genesis 1:1? How does this introduction advance John’s reason for writing the book?
  6. Read John 1:14-18 and Hebrews 1:1-4. Chris said that Jesus didn’t come to start a religion, He came to reveal God. What is it about Jesus that makes it possible for Him to help us come to know God?
  7. Read John 1:3-4 and Hebrews 2:14-18. Dallas Willard said, “Our commitment to Jesus can stand on no other foundation than a recognition that he is the one who knows the truth about our lives and our universe.” Do you think Jesus is smart? Do you think He has anything of consequence to say about money, relationships, technology, or politics? How would you learn from Jesus what He knows about those things?
  8. In the next 24-48 hours, what simple next step could you take in obedience to what you’ve learned from your time in God’s Word? Who would benefit from hearing what you’ve learned this week? Will you share it with them?
